There are three types of consumer protection councils in India which are given as below:
- Central Consumer Protection Councils
- State Consumer Protection Councils
- District Consumer Protection Councils
- Establishment by the central government by notification
- The term of Central Consumer Protection Council is of 3 years.
- The standing working group of not exceeding 30 members
- Shall consist of following members not exceeding 150 members.
- The council shall meet at least Once in a year.
- Time and place to be decided by Chairman.
- Shall observe such procedure in regard to the transaction of its business as prescribed.
Objective of Central Council
To Promote and protect rights of the consumer such as :
- To be protected against marketing of goods which are hazardous to life and property.
- Right to be informed about the quality, quantity, purity, standard etc.
- Right to assure access to a variety of goods at competitive price.
- Right to be heard & to assured to get good consideration at appropriate consumer complaint forums.
- Right to seek redressal against unfair trade practices
- Right to consumer education
2. State Consumer Protection Council Constitution
- Established by state government by passing a notification.
- It shall meet as and when necessary but not less than two meeting every year.
- Time and place to be decided by the chairman.
- Shall observe such procedure in regard to the transaction of its business as prescribed.
3. District Consumer Protection Council Constitution
- The state government shall establish in every district by notification.
- It shall meet as and when necessary but not less than two meetings every year.
- Time and place to be decided by the chairman of the district.
- Shall observe such procedure in regard to the transaction of its business as prescribed by the state government.
- The controller of District acting as a chairman.
- A number of other offical or non-official member as prescribed by the state government.
The objective is to promote and protect rights of consumers within state focusing on the district.
Consumer Dispute Redressal Agencies
- Three Tier System
- Consumer redressal agencies at district level, state level, national level
- It has right of civil court but it is not a civil court.
- The objective is to provide a cheap and speedy remedy.
These consumer protection councils make consumer awareness about consumer rights among consumers. If consumer still faces problem with companies then the consumer can file consumer complaints online against the company in the consumer court.
