What are Consumer Complaints?

Consumer complaints are those complaints that are filed by any consumer who is dissatisfied with their product or services which he received from any seller or service provider.

According to the Consumer protection act, 1986, people who buy something or receive any service for his own use, he called a consumer and only consumers can file their complaints in consumer forum. Consumer forum is for consumers’ help to provide them justice and relief for their loss.

Type of the Consumer forum

  • District Consumer Forum- for recovering less than 20 lakh rupee loss
  • State Commission Forum- for recovering between 20 lakh to 1 crore rupee loss
  •  National Commission Forum- for recovering more than 1 crore rupee loss


Charges to file a complaint 

  • For 1 lakh rupee case- 100 rupee charges
  • For between 1 to 5 lakh case -200 rupee charges
  • For 10 lakh rupee case – 400 rupee charges
  • For 20 lakh rupee case – 500 rupee charges
  • For 50 lakh rupee case- 2000 rupee charges
  • For 1 crore rupee case – 4000 rupee charges

What are Consumer Rights?

1- Right to Safety: Consumer has the right to be protected against goods & services which are hazardous to health & property.

2- Right to information: Consumer has the right to have complete information about the product he/she is buying regarding-quality, quantity, purity, the standard of product/ service.

3- Right to choice: Every consumer has the freedom to choose goods & services from various products available at competitive prices. No one can force him to purchase a particular brand only.

4- Right to be heard: If consumer exploited, dissatisfied with any product or has any complaint against any product, in all cases, he/she has the right to file a complaint & to be heard. 

5- Right to seek redressal: the consumer has the right to get relief against any unfair trade practice if a product is not according to his expectation or is dangerous. Eg- replacement of the product, removal of a defect in the product, etc. he can complain about it.

6- Right to consumer education: Consumer has the right to acquire full knowledge & to be well-informed (rights & reliefs available in case product is not according to his expectations).
